Get Further Faster

Get Further Faster

I'm not happy about it, I'm just glad I learned from it. I wasted fifteen months before realizing there was a better way. It took me fifteen months to realize it was ok for me to ask for help and build a support team to help me succeed. It took me a while, but, thankfully, I learned how to get further faster.

Get further faster

FYI: this article follows my post “Why I Wasted 15 Months” very closely. It may help to read it first. Click here to open it in a new window. Sorry for the confusion!

If you're on your own path to winning (are you thinking about Charlie Sheen right now?), there are people out there who can help you, you just have to find them. On your journey, no matter your destination, you are not alone and there is always someone who has gone before you.

Don't believe me?

Neil Armstrong was the first human to set foot on the moon. Sure, he may have been the first person to do exactly that, but his journey was very similar to the settlers first landing in the new world. Both achievements required careful planning, a desire for discovery, courage to face challenges, dedication to overcome obstacles, and the backbone to do something that had never been done before.

Can you relate to that? Whatever you're trying to do, there will always be people out there who can act as guides, lamp posts, or even Sherpas to help you on your journey.

During the first year of my writing journey, I did things my own way. I figured out, however, I could get further faster if I would ask for help and develop relationships with other people with similar goals.

Somewhere along my journey, I realized…

I needed other people.

Nothing great has ever been achieved by the efforts of a single person. The first person I needed to get on board was my wife. Check. The next group I needed help from was readers like you. In progress. The third group was the writing and blogging community. In progress.

Whether you want to start your own consulting firm, your own child-care business, or a financial coaching company, you need other people to help you get there and have the success you're looking for. By the way, if I can help you in anyway, please let me know!

I could have gotten further faster.

For fifteen months I was reaching about 125-150 people per month. I wasn't growing very fast which means I wasn't getting my message out to people. I really believe we can revolutionize the business world, and everyone can win, but my belief that I could do it myself was holding me back.

Since reaching out to the other people on the path, I've been able to reach more readers in one month than in almost three months of doing my own thing. To someone pushing toward your dream, I hope this is encouraging. Two heads are better than one, and you can get further faster if you have someone there to lighten the load.

Whatever dream you're trying achieve, or project you're trying to complete, you can reach your goal faster by building a support team to help you get there.

I connect with people much better when I'm open and honest.

I've never lied on my site and I don't plan on starting. However, in an attempt to be the best coach possible, I've often left out telling about the mistakes I've made. I've always known that no one is perfect, but I always figured people didn't want or need to hear about all of the times I've stubbed my toe along the way. Some of the best bloggers I read are the ones who connect the best. And they connect by sharing the downs as well as the ups, the challenges as well as the successes. I've learned I need to share both. To be successful, so do you.

I need to write in my “voice.”

If you know me in person, you know I'm very sarcastic and my sense of humor is as dry as Texas is in summer. Actually, in a job interview, I was told I was “dead-pan.” I don't know if it was a compliment or not, but, either way, that's actually a fairly accurate representation of my humor (I got the job so it couldn't have been too bad). I've learned that the more of “me” and my “voice” that comes out in my writing, the more relatable I am and the easier I am to connect with. I love jokes, laughing and making other people laugh; hopefully more of that will start to shine through.

I've learned so much over the past year and a half. I hope after reading why I wasted fifteen months and what I've learned from it, you can avoid some of the same mistakes and move further and faster down the path than I did.

Growing and maintaining online relationships is defiantly an important key to success and accomplishment. Great things happen when we invest in building relationships with others. The advice and wisdom I’ve gained from doing so has taken me (and continues to take me) far. Great thoughts!

I walk I fine line between doing things my own way and building a team. I self-publish instead of seeking traditional methods. I still hold out on a few of the traditional blog marketing ideas. But I am willing to let others help: photographers, editors, tech help, etc., and I’m willing to help them in return. Community is good.
