12 Lessons I've Learned from My Journey

3: Spend More Time with Loved Ones

When my dad had his stroke a few years ago, I immediately regretted all of the times I could've hung out with him but didn't. When my grandma died, I remembered all of the times I could've called her on the phone, but didn't.

Everyone has regrets; don't let missing time with loved ones be one of them. Everybody is “busy,” so we must each make time for the people we care about most. Also, we must prioritize that time over everything else.

While in Las Vegas a few years ago, I shared my sadness with my friend Desmond about missing the last phone call my dad ever made to me. Instead of answering, I hit “ignore” because I was in the middle of something I can't even remember.

And Desmond's response was life changing. Desmond asked me if I thought my dad remembers the time I didn't answer, or, instead, if I thought he remembers all the times I did answer and we talked and laughed on the phone.

We can choose what to think about and focus on. Choose to remember the good times you've spent with family and friends, and cherish those memories.
