Are You Dreaming Too Big? How to Do Big Things by Thinking Small

Are you dreaming too big? Should you slow down and grasp reality? Is it time to realize your limitations and settle for the way things are?

I wanted to write an article about dreams. I wanted to ask you what you thought about the goals you have for yourself. Are they too ambitious? Are they a little over the top? Are you really good enough to accomplish what you have set before yourself?

Are you dreaming too big?

I wholeheartedly believe that the answer is a resounding, NO! You can never dream to big. But, I want to caution and encourage you regarding your dreams, goals and aspirations.

Rome was not built in a day. When setting up the Roman Empire, its architects did not set out to create the civilization that we know from our history books. The designers of Rome undoubtedly sat in a small room and saw a future that was better than their present.

They had an idea and set out to put their plan into motion, one step at a time, one brick at a time.

General Electric, one of the world's largest companies, was started by Thomas Edison and some of his business partners in 1892. Edison  and a group of like-minded individuals probably did not sit at the kitchen table and set out to build a global company and brand.

They most likely set out with the goal of providing electricity where it had never been before. Though I can only speculate as to what happened over 120 years ago, I have a good feeling that Edison started small.

Apple was started by three guys at the Homebrew Computer Club.

Dell was started in a college dorm room.

Even Home Depot, with its first stores in rented space from JC Penny, was started by four guys with an idea.

Home Depot now has over 2,200 stores across multiple countries. Dell is one of the largest IT companies in the entire world and Apple has changed the world of technology several times since its inception.

Why is this important?

Every great business, every great achievement and every great success starts with an idea. When I started blogging, I had a small idea that quickly became a huge idea. I was on the verge of cracking under the immense weight of what I wanted to accomplish but I then realized what I've just shared with you – that all things big were once small.

If you have a goal, an idea or a dream, don't let it scare you into not acting. That is my word of caution; don't be scared to dream big dreams and set lofty goals. You're not dreaming too big and you're not setting your sights too high. But don't let the idea of what could be prevent the actions that lead to what needs to be.

I hope you're as encouraged by this message as I was. Once I realized that every company that is prominent in the world today once started out small like mine, a great pressure was lifted and I was even more energized than I was before.

So dream the big dream but develop a plan to reach it. Start small with a goal that is a stepping stone. Set out to lose 5 lbs before you lose 100. Read one book before you look to take on the whole library. Get that promotion before you try to take over the company.

I don't want you to limit yourself because you can do anything. Remember, don't get so caught up with the championship that you forget to show up for the first game.

Set your goal, take aim and pull the trigger!
