What I’ve Learned About Successful People
Since I started my podcast I have learned a great deal. I've spoken with deca-millionaires, inspirational bloggers, two ex-military types with hearts of joy, and even one of the most famous icons in the industry. I won't tell you who they are, you'll have to listen in for that.
But what I've discovered by spending time with these inspirational people is that they all have at least one thing in common.
They've all gotten to their various levels of success by doing one thing.
What is that one thing?
Keep reading and I'll share it with you!
There are two people who have helped me more than any others to get my podcast off the ground, my wonderful wife, Ashley, and my good friend Jared.
Both of them have each pushed me, coached me, and provided invaluable feedback to help me launch my podcast which I'm so incredibly excited about.
Jared planted the seed, Ashley watered it, and now both of them are providing me with guideposts along the way. Sometimes the feedback hurts but it's always appreciated.
During this building process, and through the conversations the podcast has enabled me to have, I've re-discovered a truth I've known all along.
What is that truth?
The truth is, we need each other.
In the same way the best-selling authors, the online entrepreneurs, and the attorney-turn business coach learned, I too have learned just how important it is to surround myself with the right people.
So, what is that one thing that all successful people do?
The one thing every successful person does is they surround themselves with the right people.
None of the successful people who I've had the opportunity to meet became successful alone. Each of them surrounded themselves with the right people.
Why is surrounding yourself with the right people so important?
Here's why…
The right people spur you into action.
Like a boot to a horse, the right people can get you moving and in the right direction. Like Jared did six months ago and as my wife did three months ago, you need people in your life that will encourage and support you to make the changes you need to make and grow in the ways you need to grow.
The right people make life more fun.
Sometimes life can get really stressful. But, with our trusty side-kicks with us, the down times can be less depressing. The right people can even lighten the mood and help pick us up.
The right people provide honest feedback.
Don't ignore the people who are honest with you. Be wary of the people who tell you what you want to hear. I know there's a Bible verse saying something similar, so if you find it, will you share it in the comments below?
Honest feedback will tell you your idea needs work.
Honest feedback will tell you you deserve better than what you're getting.
Honest feedback may come from unlikely places but the right people should have your best interest at heart.
The right people guide you.
Almost all of the successful people I've talked to have had some sort of mastermind group they meet with regularly.
As I say in the intro to my show, “we're here to learn from the guides who have gone before us.” The right people can be your guides.
The right people help you celebrate.
Some of the coolest experiences I've had are when people I've coached tell me how they're succeeding. I'm sure every teacher would say the same thing.
We need people in our corner cheering for us and rooting for our success. The right people won't get jealous of our wins and will be there to celebrate with us in the end.
Having the right people around you will help you in more ways than you can count. The people I have in my life have helped me in ways I never would have even thought to ask.
If you have someone in your life that has helped you to get where you are, why not send them a quick thank you email, text or voicemail.
You'll be glad you did!
I couldn’t agree more with this. I remember listening to an interview with Richard Branson in which he said the exact same thing. That, other than his willingness to consider unconventional ways forward, his ability to find the right people get around him was key to his success. And, like you say, having good friends and good people just makes whatever your striving toward way more fun.
Hey Micah! Thanks for swinging by and commenting. Do you have a link to anywhere that might show Branson’s full text or video? I’d love to watch it.
I wish I did. I’ve never been able to find a recording of it. There is this synopsis though.

Branson has got to be one of my favourite people to listen to.
