How Training For a Triathlon Exploded the Success of My Business
My company, IAM Newbody, coaches people through the process of obtaining the best physical version of themselves. We are a growing team with ten to twelve coaches at any given time.
The growth in our team has been due to a single decision.
I decided I was going to train for a Triathlon!
You may be thinking, “Ok, that shouldn't be too tough, you’re a fitness dude” and “How would that affect your business, you already workout” or “Ok, but a triathlon is a solo event” right?
While those are great questions, it wasn't the fitness part of the training process that impacted my business. The physical results pale in comparison to the person I have become as a result of the process.
Triathlons are not about the hours of training or the constant monitoring of your nutrition. They are not about the head scratching workouts or the perfect setup and fit on your bike or even your light as a feather pairs (yes plural) of running shoes.
No, success in a triathlon is all about mastering yourself.
It took about a month of training before the light bulb clicked and I thought “What if I applied this same philosophy to my business”.
I've been a personal development fanatic for several years now and have been exposed to many of the success principles being taught today such as Goal Setting, Time Management, and Mental Toughness.
I also learn by doing – so I never fully grasped what these success principles were getting at.
It wasn't until I finally sat down with pencil and paper and began planning my training schedule that I really learned how to craft a Plan of Action to accomplish a big goal.
Until I wrote out a plan, I was forced to guess at what my times would be at checkpoints on key dates to measure progress, and to think about what the next training cycle would entail.
Ultimately, my success came down to discovering the three actions I needed to take each day to accomplish my goal, and then tracking those actions.
Our key leaders with IAM Newbody came together and through this process came up with
3 daily activities to be successful
1: Follow-Up
We knew that if we could reach out to our clients on their off-days, they would stay motivated, make better decisions, and ultimately create a better transformation.
2: Level 10 Results
Level 10 Results means you've got to Walk the Walk. This changed our entire atmosphere. We made it mandatory for our coaches to have a training plan and they had to be making progress towards their own goals.
Clients began to see we weren't satisfied with our current state and were inspired to raise their goals.
3: Growth
The 3rd action we tracked was invitations. Like most small businesses, we have limited funds for marketing. So, we took a Grass-Roots approach. We created flyers for an event we hosted, and handed them out. So Simple! We saw over twenty percent of the people we talked to come back to our event…. AMAZING!
None of us dreamed of the success we saw as a result of tracking those three things.
Our business more than doubled within ninety days and we are now moving to a bigger location!
Additionally, we have applied these three success principles to other aspects of our lives: Personal Finance, Family, Faith, and Fitness with fantastic results!
I invite you to spend some time thinking about your daily actions and tracking them. Then, focus on the ones that will help you reach your goals and lead you to success.
Question: If you developed one key action or habit, what would it be? Now Track It!
Great post Jason. It’s so simple, but so true. I’m really struggling right now to take back control of my physical fitness and I know the simple answer is just tracking my exercise and my calories.
As far as business goes, a big one for me is tracking the number of hand-written notes that I send out each week. If I’m writing people “thank you” follow-ups, its because I’ve been taking the time to reach out, connect, and invest in our relationship.
I’ve found handwritten notes to have huge ROI for my business.
Thanks for sharing. I really enjoyed this post.
Larry, thank you for your comment! Jason is one of the most knowledgeable people about fitness that I know.
I also agree about the hand-written notes. They add such a personal touch. We get flooded with emails ever day, that a hand-written message would make someone stop in their tracks.
Thank you for your comment! I’m glad you enjoyed the post!
