What We Can Learn from Jeremy Lin and Lin-sanity
I have been thinking about Jeremy Lin for several days now, as millions of people probably have. If you're unfamiliar with his meteoric rise to stardom, it has truly been something to watch and I highly recommend looking up the NBA player on YouTube. I'm not much of a sports fan, but I find Jeremy's story inspiring and educational.
So I asked myself, What we can learn from Jeremy Lin and Lin-sanity?
While Jeremy's story and success is a surprise “shocker” to the world, I doubt it was a surprise to Jeremy. Though he had no way of knowing when the opportunity would come, and the timing may have been a surprise, his level of performance was expected. Even if dozens of fellow players and previous coaches never expected it, Jeremy did.
How do I know?
Simple.
No one is that amazing when they first start something unless they've spent countless hours in preparation and practice.
Sure, there are the “naturals” at sports, just like there are “naturals” at sales, cooking or many other things. However, no one walks onto the court in an NBA game and completely dominates like Jeremy did without hours and hours of preparation and practice.
These 2 P's, preparation and practice, can, do and will make all the difference in life. Jeremy was prepared long before the opportunity presented itself.
What else can we learn from Jeremy Lin?
We can learn to be ready and waiting. We can learn to put ourselves in a position to be successful. We can learn to be patient but to still follow our dreams.
Jeremy was hoping for the chance to play the sport he loves and become a star, and when the opportunity came, he not only pounced on it but he capitalized in a big way.
When Jeremy got his chance he was ready.
When you get yours, will you be?
Ellory, I love how you kept driving home the points of preparation and practice. Doing them long enough will make you a natural.
Joe, I’ve been thinking about writing a secondary post to this, focusing more on preparation and practice and less on Jeremy Lin. Since he’s out of the spotlight now, maybe something else would be more relevant. What do you think? Would that be helpful and/or interesting?
It could help expand upon the topic and delve deeper than you were able to with the focus on Jeremy Lin. I think it’s something that would be great to see.
