Why I Chose to Not Watch the NBA Finals
I'm not really into sports.
In fact, my wife likes watching sports more than I do and she occasionally twists my arm into watching a game with her.
I grew up playing soccer, but after discovering theater arts in my junior year of high school, I lost my interest in watching people run around a field, court or whatever else it's called.
As the NBA finals have taken over TV, I found it interesting to watch people's reactions in person and over social media.
Last night, while the final game of the Heat vs. Spurs series played on my TV, my wife sitting on the couch and staring intently, and me going outside to enjoy a cigar and write, I wondered, “Am I the only person in the world not watching basketball?”
Some people love sports. I mean, they really love sports. A friend of my, JR Wilco, the editor of PoundingtheRock.com, was even interviewed on a sports podcast the other day and was talking about stats and games he remembered from 8 years ago!
But to me, sports don't draw me in. I'd much rather be doing several other things. Although, if Baylor is playing football, I do try to watch those games, and RGIII has turned me into a Redskins fan!
Here are a few things I'd rather do instead of watching “the game”:
- Enjoy the weather
- Write for this blog
- Read a book
- Take a nap
- Watch a movie
- Watch an episode of Firefly
- Play video games with friends
But mostly, I didn't care to watch the games because I wouldn't learn anything from it and it wouldn't add value to my life. I try to keep my mind active and working today so that I can relax and enjoy life later.
As Dave Ramsey would say,
Live like no one else today, so you can LIVE like no one else later!”
Of course, Dave is referring to saving and getting out of debt, but I think it works for personal development too. I'd rather invest in myself and find ways to help you, than watch a basketball game.
So, Here's Why I Chose to Not Watch the NBA Finals:
- I didn't want to
- Watching someone else live their dream doesn't help me achieve mine (Tweet that!)
- I'd rather spend 3 hours learning, reading, writing or working on the podcast
If you're not a fan of sports either, let me know! I'd love to know that I'm not the only person out there who'd rather be doing something else.
I do have a small confession to make though. I did catch the last seven minutes of the game and it was pretty exciting!
Questions: What about you? Are you a sports fan? Did you watch the epic Game 7 of the NBA Finals? Let me know!
My wife and I are both basketballl fans so we DEFINITELY watched. Personally, I love to study and read but there are times I need to turn off my brain…the Finals allowed me to do that 🙂
Hey Mike! Thank you for commenting. I saw it last night but was about to fall asleep so I had to wait until now.
I agree, there are times, especially at the end of a long day, where all I want to do is watch TV, turn on a video game, or listen to David Gray and close my eyes. A good friend of mine is harassing me on Facebook right now because he knows my proclivity for video games and I forgot to mention that.
Thanks again or the comment! Were you happy w/ the Game 7 result?

Yeah, I happened to be available, so I watched Game 7. To tell you the truth, I watched games 6 and 5 as well. Ok, I should be honest. I watched all of the Finals games, alright?
In fact, the only Spurs playoffs game I didn’t see all the way through was Game 4 of the Western Conference Finals on Memorial Day, and that was only because my two daughters had bounced their heads off each other and needed to be taken to the emergency room to get stitched up. (But you’d better believe that I had the TV in the offertory tuned to the game! And I had my phone with me to play a movie for them, so everybody was as happy as possible, given the circumstances.)
JR Wilco is passionate about his basketball! Thanks for commenting. I hope your daughters are all better!

I enjoy watching the NFL whenever I can, especially the Green Bay Packers (Grew up watching them even though I’ve only live in Oregon and Cali). However, I have several things I’d rather be doing than spending time watching sports/Football like spending the time with family or writing.
Dan, it’s nice to know that I’m not the only one who doesn’t watch sports all the time.
